[os-tee-oh-jen-uh-sis] [im-per-fek-tuh]

Joe Korkowski reports on the special day for Sophia Rose Nohre and the students at her school.

This year our kindergarten class wanted to raise awareness at our school for Wishbone Day and Osteogenesis Imperfecta with our friend Sophia. The project started small, but quickly grew as we worked with her family and gained assistance from outside resources. With the help of our good friends at Thrivent Financial we were able to purchase yellow t-shirts for all the students in our class with our themed slogan, “Can you say Osteogenesis Imperfecta?” on the front, and the phonetic pronunciation [os-tee-oh-jen-uh-sis  im-per-fek-tuh] with a definition on the back. 

We also purchased enough rubber bracelets for all the kids in the school. Sophia and her classmates will visit each classroom and pass out the bracelets to the other students. We will also be giving each student an ‘OI’ pencil (donated by Sophia's grandparents). 

We put together a video narrated by Sophia, and each of her classmates drew a picture and added the words/voice to explain something that they had learned about Sophia and her OI.  They also shared some of the ways we help to keep Sophia safe at school.  

Teachers in the other classrooms will be sharing the video with their classes and encouraging their students to wear yellow too. To top it off we purchased a yellow balloon for the back of each students chair in our class, and Sophia’s parents are supplying cookies for the class!
